A Pharmacist's Overview

NHS Senior Clinical Pharmacist, Irsalan Ahmed (MPharm) provides a simple explanation of the medication below:

'Atrovent contains an anticholinergic bronchodilator used for maintenance and treatment of bronchospasm associated with respiratory conditions such as COPD, chronic bronchitis and emphysema.'.

If you think Atrovent is a treatment that can help you, start an online consultation now for a registered prescriber to review. If treatment is deemed suitable, they can prescribe it, and we can deliver it to you from the comfort of your own home with a range of convenient delivery and payment options for you to choose from. If you have any questions about a medication, you should always consult your doctor with any questions prior to starting treatment, to ensure that it is safe and suitable for you.

Atrovent HFA is an anticholinergic bronchodilator that is packaged in an inhaler and used for the treatment and maintenance of bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It relaxes the muscles in the airways and increases air flow to the lungs.

Atrovent is used to prevent bronchospasm, or narrowing of the airways in the lungs, in people with bronchitis, emphysema, or COPD.

For more information on the prescription medication patients should refer to the Atrovent patient information leaflet.

Atrovent HFA works by relaxing the muscles around the airways so that they open up and allow you to breathe more easily.

For the prevention of the symptoms of lung disease, this medication must be used regularly to be effective. Atrovent does not work as fast as a quick-relief inhaler. Use your quick-relief inhaler for wheezing or sudden shortness of breath.

Atrovent has been proven effective in the treatment and maintenance of bronchospasm associated with COPD. It effectively narrows airways in the lungs in people with COPD, emphysema, or bronchitis.

Follow the directions of your doctor or the instructions provided for in the information leaflet that comes with the product package before you start using Atrovent HFA.

Follow the instructions for the priming of the inhaler if using it for the first time or if you have not used it for more than 3 days. When you are priming the inhaler, point the spray away from your face to avoid having the medication get into your eyes.

Inhale the medication by mouth a directed by your doctor, usually 4 times a day. This medication may cause pain or irritation when it gets into the eyes. It may also result in temporary blurred vision and other vision changes. To avoid the medication accidentally getting into your eyes, put your lips tightly around the mouthpiece and keep your eyes closed when you are using the inhaler.

If your prescribed dose is 2 puffs on the inhaler, wait at least one minute between the puffs.

Rinse your mouth with water after using the inhaler to prevent dry mouth and irritation of the throat.

Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to the treatment.

Clean the inhaler’s mouthpiece once a week with water. Allow to air-dry before using again.

If your doctor instructed you to use this medication regularly, it will work best if you use it at evenly spaced intervals. It will help you to not forget your dose if you will take it at the same time each day. Do not increase your dose, use this medication more frequently, or stop using it without first consulting your doctor.

Your inhaler has a labelled number of inhalations in the package. Keep track of the number of your inhalations and throw away the canister after you used the last number.

Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.

The usual dose of Atrovent HFA is four inhalations in one day. Your doctor may recommend that take 2 puffs for each dose, depending on your medical condition and your response to treatment.

Medicines and their possible side effects affect individual users differently. Not everyone who uses Atrovent HFA will experience the possible side effects.

When using Atrovent HFA, dizziness, stomach upset, nausea, constipation, or dry mouth may occur. If any of these side effects will persist or worsen, inform your doctor immediately.

Your doctor has prescribed Atrovent HFA because he deemed that the benefits to you are greater than the risk of side effects.

In very rare cases, this medication may cause severe sudden worsening of breathing problems right after use. If you have sudden worsening of breathing, use your quick-relief inhaler and get medical help immediately.

Inform your doctor if you have any very serious side effects, such as eye pain/swelling/redness, or changes in your vision.

This medication may result in a very serious allergic reaction, although it is extremely rate. Get immediate medical help if you any observe any symptoms of serious allergic reaction, including swelling or itching of the face/throat/tongue, rash, trouble breathing, or severe dizziness.

Before using Atrovent HFA, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or tiotropium, or atropine or other belladonna type of drugs, or if you have any other allergies. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that may cause you an allergic reaction.

Before using Atrovent, tell your doctor your medical history, especially if you have personal or family history of glaucoma, or difficulty urinating.

Atrovent HFA may make you dizzy or cause vision changes. Consumption of alcohol or use of marijuana can make you dizzier. Do not drive, operate machinery, or perform any task that requires alertness or clear vision until you are sure that you can do it safely. Limit your consumption of alcoholic beverages while using this medication.

It is important that you tell your doctor about all other medications that you are using or about to use before you start using Atrovent HFA.

During pregnancy, Atrovent HFA should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss with your doctor the possible side effects and risk of using this medication while pregnant.

It is not known if Atrovent HFA passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Drug interactions may change your medication work or increase your risk for serious side effects. Share with your doctor a list of all medications, including prescription and non-prescriptions medications, and herbal products that you are using before you start using Atrovent HFA. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicines without getting first the approval of your doctor.
