What is Bricanyl Inhaler?
Terbutaline Sulphate
Bricanyl is an inhaler that contains the medicine terbutaline. It belongs to a group of medicines called beta agonists. Terbutaline is prescribed as a rescue treatment for sudden breathlessness or wheezing in people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. It is referred to as a reliever because it provides relief to the symptoms of breathlessness.
Terbutaline is a bronchodilator because it dilates or widens the airways. It can also be taken as a syrup or in tablet form.
Patient Information Leaflet
For more information on the prescription medication patients should refer to the Bricanyl patient information leaflet.
How does Bricanyl Inhaler work?
Bricanyl contains terbutaline sulfate, a short-acting beta 2 agonist. It works by acting directly on the receptors in the lungs called beta 2 receptors. It causes the muscles in the airways to relax and allows the airways to open.
In conditions where there is narrowing of the airways, such as in COPD or asthma, it is difficult for air to get in and out of the lungs. It can be made easy by opening the airways, which terbutaline makes possible.
What are the benefits of using Bricanyl Inhaler?
Bricanyl is an effective way of breathing easily for people with asthma or COPD where the airways are constricted, making it difficult for the air to get in and out of the lungs. Bricanyl is effective in relaxing the muscles in the airways to let it open for easy breathing. Bricanyl provides fast relief for the symptoms of asthma and COPD.
How do I use Bricanyl Inhaler?
Terbutaline in Bricanyl is commonly taken as an inhaler device. The inhalation of the medicine allows it to act directly in the lungs where it is needed. Inhaling the medication also reduces the potential for side effects in other parts of the body because the amount of the medicine absorbed into the blood when it is taken by mouth is lower than when it is taken by mouth.
Bricanyl inhaler is a reliever because it works very quickly when inhaled into the lungs. It can be used shortly before exercising or before exposure to allergens in order to prevent wheezing. The medicine is effective for up to five hours after inhaling a dose.
It is very important to use the inhaler correctly, otherwise you will not be breathing the right dose of the medication into your lungs. Follow the instructions of your doctor on the proper use of the inhaler or follow the instructions provided for in the information leaflet that comes with the product.
Bricanyl Inhaler – It is a dry powder inhaler. The medicine is in powder form that is ready to be breathed in. The inhaler must be prepared first inside the inhaler. You can do this by turning the blue grip at the base of the turbohaler as far as it will go in one direction. Then turn it back as far as it will go in the opposite direction. It does not matter which direction you turn it first. Once you hear a click, it means that the inhaler is loaded and ready to be used. Breathe out fully then put the mouthpiece to your lips and breathe in steadily and deeply through your mouth.
Rinse your mouth out with water after taking a dose of Bricanyl turbohaler. Rinsing will remove some of the medicine that may stick inside your mouth and throat, which if not removed will increase the amount of medicine absorbed into the bloodstream that may increase the possibility of side effects.
Bricanyl Inhaler dosage
The recommended dose of Bricanyl Inhaler is one inhalation as required. Do not take more than four inhalations of Bricanyl in a 24-hour period. One inhalation from the Bricanyl inhaler will last for up to six hours.

Uncontrolled asthma poses more of a threat to the developing baby, making it important that asthma be controlled during pregnancy. Whenever possible, asthma medication should be taken by inhaler in order to minimize the absorption of the medicine into the bloodstream, which could increase the possibility of side effects. Bricanyl inhaler could be taken as usual during pregnancy.
Terbutaline passes into the breast milk but only in small amounts that will unlikely harm the nursing baby. Bricanyl inhaler can be used normally during breastfeeding.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before you start using Bricanyl inhaler.
It is important to tell your doctor all medications that you are taking or planning to take before you start using Bricanyl inhaler. Similarly, check with your doctor before you start taking a new medication while you are using Bricanyl inhaler.
