What is Eucreas?
Eucreas tablets have two active ingredients – metformin and vildagliptin. Both medicines are used to help control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
Eucreas is for use by non-insulin dependent diabetes patients. It is licensed for use in people with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar is not controlled by the maximum tolerated dose of metformin alone, or who are already taking metformin and vildagliptin as separate tablets.
Eucreas is also used in combination with a sulphonylurea or with insulin.

How does Eucreas work?
Eucreas tablets contain metformin and vildagliptin.
Metformin is an antidiabetic medicine known as a biguanide. It works in various ways to lower the amount of blood sugar in the blood. I reduces the amount of sugar produced by the cells in the liver. Second, it increases the sensitivity of muscle cells to insulin, enabling these cells to remove sugar from the blood more efficiently. Finally, it also delays the absorption of sugar from the intestines into the bloodstream after eating.
Vildagliptin is an antidiabetic medicine known as a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor. It helps in the reduction of blood sugar levels by preventing the breakdown of the incretin hormones glucagon-like peptide-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide. The hormones are naturally produced by the body in response to the food intake. They stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin in response to the increased levels of glucose in the blood, also reducing the production of glucagon, a hormone that normally increases glucose production by the liver. These actions help in controlling the blood sugar levels.
The combination of medicines helps in controlling sugar levels both directly after meals and between meals.
What are the benefits of using Eucreas?
The combination of metformin and vildagliptin has been shown benefits in lowering the blood sugar levels in individuals whose blood sugar cannot be lowered anymore by the maximum tolerated dose of metformin alone.
How do I use Eucreas?
Eucreas tablets should be taken twice a day, one in the morning and one in the evening, regularly each day with a meal.
The dose of Eucreas that is prescribed by your doctor is based on how well your blood sugar is controlled, among other reasons. Follow the instructions given by your doctor or by the information leaflet that comes with the package of the medication.
If you forget a dose, take it with your next meal, unless you are due to take your second dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.

Your doctor should check your blood sugar level from time to time while you are on Eucreas. You should avoid drinking alcohol while taking Eucreas because alcohol can increase your risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis.
Metformin can cause lactic acidosis, which is an excess of lactic acid in the blood. It is likely to occur in people with kidney problems.
Your kidneys and your liver should be monitored regularly while you are on Eucreas.
Your doctor will stop your taking of this medication temporarily if you are going to have a certain type of X-ray that involves an injection of iodinated dye. Consult your doctor about your diabetic treatment before you undergo surgery that will require a general anaesthetic.
