Exforge is a prescription medication that is used to help treat high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Having high blood pressure means that you have a reading of 140/90mmHg or above. 

Amlodipine / Valsartan

Exforge contains two substances called amlodipine and valsartan. Amlodipine stops calcium from moving into the blood vessel wall which stops the blood vessels from tightening. Valsartan works by blocking the effect of angiotensin II, a substance made by the body that tightens blood vessels. 

You should only ever use Exforge as it has been prescribed to you. Usually, you will need to take your medication at the same time every day. This medication can be taken with or without food, however, it should not be taken with grapefruit or grapefruit juice. 

You should only ever use the dosage of Exforge that has been prescribed to you. The usual dosage of Exforge is one tablet a day, swallowed whole with the help of water.

Exforge is a suitable medication for adults over the age of 18 who need treatment to help manage and treat high blood pressure. 

Exforge may not be a suitable treatment option for some people. This medication should not be used by anyone who is allergic to any of the ingredients in it. This medication should also only be used by those over the age of 18. Do not use Exforge if:

  • You have severe liver problems
  • You have severely low blood pressure 
  • You have a narrowing of the aortic valve
  • You suffer from heart failure
  • You have diabetes or impaired kidney function

No, you should not use Exforge if you are pregnant if you think you might be pregnant, or if you are trying to become pregnant. Exforge is not recommended for use during the first 3 months of pregnancy, and must NOT be used in the final 3 months of pregnancy.

No, you should not use Exforge whilst you are breastfeeding. This is because a small amount of the medication has been shown to pass into breast milk. 

Exforge may interact or interfere with other medications. It is important to let your healthcare provider know about any other medications you are using or any medications you have used in the past. Let your doctor know if:

  • You are using ACE inhibitors
  • You are using diuretics
  • You are using lithium
  • You are using potassium supplements
  • You are using NSAID painkillers 
  • You are using anticonvulsant agents

As with all other medications, some users may experience side effects when they are using Exforge. The most common side effects of Exforge include:

  • Flu
  • Blocked nose
  • Sore throat
  • Discomfort when swallowing
  • Headaches
  • Swelling of the hands, legs, ankles or feet
  • Redness and warm feeling of the face or neck
