Glucophage SR (Metformin) is a medication used for type 2 diabetes but it is also regularly prescribed "off-label" to treat PCOS and its symptoms. Because many women with PCOS have insulin resistance, Glucophage SR (Metformin) can encourage regular menstrual cycles, stimulate ovulation and lower the risk of miscarriage.

Prescribing "off-label" means to prescribe a drug for something not covered by the product license. It doesn't mean that the drug is unsafe or unfit for purpose - just that the drug manufacturer has not extended the license to cover the additional use(s).

What is Glucophage SR?

Glucophage SR is a medication used for type 2 diabetes but it is also regularly prescribed "off-label" to treat PCOS and its symptoms. Because many women with PCOS have insulin resistance, Metformin can encourage regular menstrual cycles, stimulate ovulation and lower the risk of miscarriage.

The main difference between taking Sukkarto SR as opposed to Metformin, is that Glucophage SR is a slow releasing medication.

For more information on the prescription medication patients should refer to the Glucophage SR patient information leaflet.

Using Metformin in women to treat PCOS

Many studies have been conducted to look at the use of Metformin in women who have been diagnosed with PCOS. Most of those studies have shown that Metformin can actually make periods more regular and can improve the fertility in women suffering from PCOS. Metformin works best in overweight women with PCOS. However, it is less effective in women who are markedly obese. Recent studies have shown that taking Metformin up to 12 weeks of a pregnancy can reduce the risk of miscarriages.

Side effects of taking Metformin

Metformin can cause nausea, abdominal bloating and wind. In severe cases, it can cause vomiting or diarrhoea. Most women tolerate it very well, particularly if the dose is increased gradually. To minimise any side effects the tablets should be taken in the middle of a meal or straight after a meal. Side effects usually settle after 1-2 weeks.

A doctor's overview of the side effects of this medication and how to manage them:

Dr Samantha Miller - GMC Number 7561464

NHS Specialty Doctor in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Forensic Medicine, Samantha Miller, provides a simple explanation of the common side effects of the medication and how you can manage them:

The most common side effects of Glucophage SR are digestive problems, such as feeling sick, being sick, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite. Any digestive upset typically resolves within the first two weeks of taking Glucophage SR. It is helpful to take the tablets with or immediately after a meal. Other common side effects include changes in taste and decreased vitamin B12 levels (symptoms may include extreme tiredness, a sore and red tongue, numbness or tingling, or pale or yellow skin). If you experience any side effects, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
