What is Lescol?

Lescol belongs to a group of drugs called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, or statins. Fluvastatin is the generic name of Lescol.
Lescol is used in adults and children who are at least 10 years of age to lower high cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood and to slow the build-up of plaque in the blood vessels.
Lescol is also used to lower the risk of heart complications in certain people with coronary heart disease.
How does Lescol (Fluvastatin) work?
Lescol reduces cholesterol by inhibiting an enzyme in the liver that is necessary for the production of cholesterol. Lescol lowers the total and bad cholesterol as well as triglycerides in the blood. LDL cholesterol is believed to be an important cause of coronary artery disease. Lowering LDL cholesterol levels slows and may even reverse coronary artery disease. Lescol also increases HDL cholesterol. Raising the levels of HDL cholesterol may slow coronary artery disease.

How do I use Lescol (Fluvastatin)?
Lescol Tablet
Take Lescol exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Also, follow the directions on the patient information leaflet that comes with the product package. Do not take Lescol in larger or smaller amounts or for a longer period than recommended by your doctor.
Lescol is usually taken once or twice daily, with or without a meal.
Do not crush, chew, break, or open a tablet or capsule. Swallow it whole. Tell your doctor if. You have difficulty swallowing the pill.
You can take an extended-release tablet at any time of the day.
The tablet or capsule should be taken at the same time each day in order to remember better that you have to take a dose. Follow the dosing instructions of your doctor.
Take Lescol with a full glass of water.
Frequent blood tests may be required while you are taking Lescol.
It may take up to 4 weeks before your cholesterol level will improve. Keep taking Lescol as direction even if you feel well. High cholesterol usually has no symptoms.
Lescol is part of a complete treatment program that may include diet, exercise, and weight control.

The usual dose of Lescol is one tablet once or twice daily. The dose of your medication is based on your medical condition, your age, your response to the medication, and other medications for cholesterol that you might be taking.
What side effects can Lescol (Fluvastatin) have?

Medicines and their possible side effects affect individual users differently. Not everyone who uses Lescol will experience the possible side effects.
Your doctor has prescribed this medication because he deemed that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.
Get emergency medical attention immediately if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Lescol, such as hives, difficulty of breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
In rare cases, Lescol can cause a condition resulting in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. Call your doctor immediately if you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have a fever, unusual tiredness, or dark colored urine.
Also call your doctor immediately if you have:
- Signs of a kidney problem such as little or no urinating painful or difficult urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath; or
- Liver problems such as loss of appetite, upper stomach pain, tiredness, clay-colored stool, dark urine, jaundice.
The common side effects of Lescol include the following:
- A headache
- Muscle pain
- Stomach pain, nausea, or indigestion
Report to your doctor immediately if you have other side effects that you believe are associated with your use of Lescol.
You should not take Lescol if you are allergic to Fluvastatin, or if you have an active liver disease. To make sure that Lescol is safe for you, tell your doctor if you ever had:
- Liver disease
- Kidney disease
- Muscle pain or weakness
- Diabetes
- A thyroid disorder
- If you drink more than 2 alcoholic beverages daily.
Lescol should not be used by anyone who is younger than 10 years old.
Lescol can harm an unborn baby. Do not use Lescol if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking Lescol, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while you are taking Lescol.
Lescol can pass into breast milk and may cause side effects in the nursing infant. Do not take Lescol if you are breastfeeding.
Some drugs may increase your risk of serious muscle problems if you take them together with Lescol. Your doctor may need to change your treatment plan if you use some medicines that will interact with Lescol such as gemfibrozil, fenofibrate, fenofibric acid or medicines that contain niacin.
Many drugs can interact with Lescol. Tell your doctor about all the current medicines and any that you start or stop using, especially other cholesterol medications.
