Fluvastatin

Lescol belongs to a group of drugs called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, or statins. Fluvastatin is the generic name of Lescol.

Lescol is used in adults and children who are at least 10 years of age to lower high cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood and to slow the build-up of plaque in the blood vessels.

Lescol is also used to lower the risk of heart complications in certain people with coronary heart disease.

Lescol reduces cholesterol by inhibiting an enzyme in the liver that is necessary for the production of cholesterol. Lescol lowers the total and bad cholesterol as well as triglycerides in the blood. LDL cholesterol is believed to be an important cause of coronary artery disease. Lowering LDL cholesterol levels slows and may even reverse coronary artery disease. Lescol also increases HDL cholesterol.  Raising the levels of HDL cholesterol may slow coronary artery disease.

The use of Lescol will be beneficial in the lowering of the total and LDL cholesterol in the blood while at the same time increasing the levels of HDL cholesterol. The lowering of the LDL and increasing the HDL levels will decrease the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attack.

The tablet or capsule should be taken at the same time each day in order to remember better that you have to take a dose. Follow the dosing instructions of your doctor.

Take Lescol with a full glass of water.

Frequent blood tests may be required while you are taking Lescol.
