How does finasteride work in the body?

Finasteride prevents an enzyme called 5alpha-reductase, from metabolising testosterone into the more stronger androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By reducing the levels of DHT in your body, this could lead to minimising hair loss.

How long does it take for finasteride to start working?

You may see it start to work after 3 to 6 months of continuous use.

What health problems does finasteride help with?

It can also help to shrink enlarged prostate glands in males. This prevents a disease called benign prostatic hyperplasia from developing. 

Is finasteride safe to use?

Yes, it is generally safe to use for a long period of time. However, it is only indicated for use in males, not females or children, unless specified by a specialist.

The rare side effects are breast cancer symptoms and depression. These usually happen to less than 1 in 1000 people. 

Does finasteride slow down hair loss?

Hair loss is caused by how sensitive your hair follicles are to hormones like DHT which is found in skin, hair follicles and the prostate. If your hair follicles are sensitive to even small levels of DHT, then hair loss occurs. Finasteride lowers DHT levels which improves scalp hair growth and prevents further hair loss.

Does finasteride work on the hairline?

Yes, finasteride should work to grow the hairline back in men.

Are there any long-term side effects from taking finasteride?

Some men have reported breast cancer after taking finasteride. If you notice on your chest any lumps, swelling or pain, or some discharge from your nipples, please contact your doctor. 

After stopping finasteride, some men may still have sexual problems. If you do experience this, please let your doctor know.

Will finasteride affect my contraception?

Finasteride is not known to affect any contraception. However, finasteride is not usually taken by women unless under specialist advice.

Does finasteride block DHT?

What happens if I stop taking finasteride?

After treatment is discontinued, hair loss will happen in about 6 to 12 months as finasteride does not completely cure hair loss. Do not stop taking finasteride until you speak to your doctor for advice. 

Can I drive or ride a bike while taking finasteride?

Yes, finasteride does not cause drowsiness and does not affect your ability to drive or ride a bike.

You can drink alcohol, in moderate amounts, while on finasteride.

No, you can eat and drink normally while taking finasteride.

Can changing my lifestyle help with an enlarged prostate?

You can make some dietary and physical activity changes to prevent an enlarged prostate and its symptoms which are urinary frequency and urgency.

• Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables

• Limit drinking 2 hours before bedtime to reduce bathroom visits at night, and also before going out on long journeys
